First the Indians used multiples of 10s, 100s , 1000s and so on.let it be x,y,z resp.so 2555 would be 2z5y5x5.The roman numerals represented 20 as xx but indian numerals as 2x.That was the starting point of the Indian numerals.Then gradually in course of time some one had an idea to remove the symbols for multiples of 10 and it still made sense! Multiplication gave rise? to exponentiation.

? I'm an indian hindu and i worship cow and on certain occasion drink cow urine for medicinal and spiritual reasons. Just like other religions not every single "ACT" has scientific explanation or a justification. I know muslims and jews dont eat pork while christians love it so who am i to question it. Even arabian countries calls it Hindu numerals, Indians even invented used algebra before the arabs did. Mathematicians like? Aryabhata, Brahmagupta and the recordings in the Vedas and Buddhist scriptures easily tells this.
